Nokia N73 review in words Pictures to follow...
Those of you who know me are aware that I don’t really care about a phone’s appearance, but his time was much different, the N73 is the most attractive phone I’ve ever seen, I’d seen it before in pictures, videos and even with other people, but to examine it first hand is a different thing, it has a very modern and sophisticated design. The screen is bigger than half of the phone, but it really suits the design, the keys are a bit tight, but it isn’t a very big problem.
I booted up the phone in offline mode, with no SIM card. It was quite fast and I noticed that the Nokia start-up tune was quite different, it seemed to have some background sound.
There’s a VGA camera on the top right corner which isn’t very clear, but it does the job that it is meant to do, which is video calling. In the top as well, there is a LED, which flashes blue.
In the right side there are a camera button, a play button and zoom buttons, both zoom in and zoom out, but the funny thing is that they are the other way around that they should be, in other words, they are inverted.
The top has the on/off button and also a big speaker, and the bottom of the phone also has speakers, which makes me think that it isn’t only stereo but it’s also surround sound.
The back cover has a camera slider which opens the camera application, and it works like a charm. In my first -*test*-('"), the camera crashed, but gradually I managed to make it work nicely, and the colours were truly magnificent, the autofocus is much faster than the N93 and what I loved about the side buttons, is that they have a lovely blue backlight in them, something I’ve never seen before in a phone.
The memory card slot in the bottom of the phone is quite hard to open, you really need good nails for it…
The UI is the one in Symbian OS9.1 Series 60 third edition, the same in 3250, N93 and others, and I have spoken of it before, but I’ll just remind you that it is the most advanced operating system for phones, and let’s you minimize applications, it let’s install countless applications for all purposes you can think of, it has Bluetooth v2 which can connect to 6 devices at the same time, the phone is able to work as a mass storage device, in other words, as a flash drive, depending on the memory card space. It also has Wireless LAN, PictBridge and 3G.
The firmware in the phone was v3.06.38.0.0.1, which is a bit old. An interesting factor in this particular OS9.1 is that the menu only had 11 icons, it had a “Download!” application, which I never saw in other OS9.1s, it had an “Applications” folder, but no “My Own” folder or “Connectivity” folder and the camera icon should be on the main menu, but it isn’t there.
The Office folder came “F-Secure” antivirus, Adobe PDF and Quickword package which contains word and excel.
There is a radio application as well. Clicking on the Multimedia key sounds a futuristic tone.
The N73, just like it’s brother N93, has two browsers, one for WAP and the other for the actual web. The N73 keypad colours are blue backlighten, unlike the N93 which has white.
There is a shortcut to get to the gallery, which is on the right side of the phone, the play button which I mentioned previously, and that’s the good thing about these new symbian phones, they are full of keys and shortcuts, very useful indeed.
The camera, which is the most important part, is a 3.2 Megapixel with Carl Zeiss Lens, autofocus, and flash, I will speak about it more in detail when comparing all the phone cameras. There is a very useful option when clicking the send button, which allows you to conduct web uploads of your images, which completely eliminates the need of computers.
The music player was very good as well, there was a 3-D sound application which let’s you use specific ringing tones with surround sound, and you can make them sound like they are going around you. The sound is very loud, with an impressive quality, very clear and one of the hidden advantages of this phone, it’s a pity that there is no 3.5 mm jack.
Advantages: Symbian OS9.1 Series 60 3rd edition, 3.2 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and autofocus, very loud surround sound speakers, modern design, backlighten side keys.
Disadvantages: No optical zoom, No 3.5mm jack, camera and video crash often
Rating: 8.7 /10
